And then there was one... what a farce! Fujitsu, knowing that it highly unlikely to win anything but a booby prize, has decided not to bother to bid for any of the UK taxpayer money available to bring broadband to benighted swathes of rural Blighty. Instead the incumbent telco, BT, will now get what remains of the £530 million that is still left on the table, always provided it can be bothered to turn up to claim the cash. Isn't competition wonderful? By Martyn Warwick. (1)

"Where is a multi-billion pound railway build really a broadband initiative?" asked Alice. "In the UK of course," roared the Queen. An interesting piece of (admittedly partial) research shows that consumers might be judged to be getting a bad deal out of broadband/TV bundles (or that marketeers are doing a brilliant job of selling them). Take your pick. By I.D. Scales (1)

The UK government is losing the argument over the desirability of an unpopular and probably unnecessary £75 billion new high speed rail network in southern and central England. With it's original rationale in tatters the administration is now claiming that those living near the noisy new line will get additional perks such as better broadband and "faster" water. Must be worth it then. Martyn Warwick reports. (1)
