David Bernstein, VP of Strategy at Cloudscaling, claims the only way service providers can ultimately beat the Googles and Amazons, with their huge, super-scaled, commodity server clouds, is to join them.  It's a huge step but it should pay off: not only can those who go that route offer low-cost cloud services to their customers, but the same infrastructure should let them migrate their own legacy applications into the cloud to tap its cost and agility advantages.
