Vendors propose plugging LTE voice problem with GAN

A group of vendors has banded together to develop the 3GPP Generic Access Network standard (GAN) to support voice over LTE.

The VoLGA (Voice over LTE via Generic Access) Forum, announced today, will develop standards to support voice and messaging services over  recently-announced, but soon-to-arrive, LTE radio access networks.

The idea is that operators should be able to use their existing 2G/GSM and 3G/UMTS core infrastructure to handle voice, so the forum will adapt the Generic Access Network standard (GAN) standards. These were originally developed as Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) to support fixed/mobile convergence in the home via WiFi (802.11).

At the core of an LTE mobile network is a 'flat' IP infrastructure that is designed to carry all the traffic multimedia-style.
