Three Strikes struck down in the UK, Big Brother thwarted

The UK government has rowed back from what appeared to be position that supported a version of the '3 strikes and you're out' approach to Internet file sharing 'offenders'.

The Intellectual Property Minister (yes, there is one) David Lammy has been telling key media outlets (the BBC and The Times) that the government is no longer interested in forcing ISPs to pursue file-sharers and start disconnecting them from the Internet with a 'graduated response' should they continue to download.

Lammy has said that trying to push through UK legislation along the lines of that implemented in France (despite heated opposition) would be "too complex".

"We can't have a system where we're talking about arresting teenagers in their bedrooms," Lammy said to The Times.

In fact, opposition to the 3 strikes enabling legislation pushed through the European Parliament in the Summer under cover of the Telecoms Package, has clearly concentrated political minds.
