While the global recession is undeniably going to be a tough time for all industries, it may present revenue opportunities for service providers, as text messaging continues to soar globally.

According to messaging firm Acision's figures, which are based only on the 2008/2009 New Year SMS numbers, SMS is showing no signs of a slowing down, as global traffic increased by 30 per cent over the New Year period compared to the same period last year.

Globally, there were over 55 billion text messages sent, further
demonstrating that SMS is still the preferred choice for communicating and is set to remain the most dominant data revenue driver for service providers in 2009, claims Acision.

In North America, there were over six billion New Year messages sent, barely significant in comparison to the Philippines where over three billion messages were sent over New Year by a subscriber base of just 66 million.
