Microsoft gets musical with DRM tracks on mobile

The world's largest software company has launched a new music download service on its MSN Mobile portal that will allow UK consumers to download digital rights management (DRM) tracks, ring tones and music videos across all network operators. But, is it a case of too little too late, especially as rival Apple has just released over eight million DRM-free tracks costing far less?

Micrsoft's new paid-for service, carries over a million full tracks, 10,000 music videos and 25,000 Realtones (songs in ringtone format) from record labels including Sony, EMI and Warner.

"With over 130 handsets having access to the music store from day one, this is an exciting proposition that for the first time provides consumers a network agnostic service with a vast array of new and old music from major music labels," said Hugh Griffiths, director of MSN Mobile UK. 

The software giant has plans to release additional compatible handsets throughout the year.

However,  why should mobile web users purchase and download full-tracks for £1.50, music videos at £2.00 and Realtones for £3.00 via its MSN Mobile portal, when they are not DRM-free? According to the MSN Mobile site, “When you purchase the music, you get unlimited plays for the content whilst it remains on the device.
