The times they are a-changin' for US telcos

Obama's new administration is about to shake up the US telecommunications industry, according to reports.

On January 6th, a technology-focused political all-star lineup will aim to curb media consolidation, help bridge the digital divide and approve net neutrality legislation.

Last week, an outspoken advocate of equal access to low-cost phone and Internet services, Democrat Jay Rockefeller of West Virgina was voted to chair the Committee on Commerce, Science and Technology.

Rockefeller, who has rural broadband access at the top of his agenda, will play a pivotal role in telecoms legislation. He replaces Democrat Dan Inouye of Hawaii, who was known for cuddling up with the industry.

Fellow Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota is also expected to rattle up the industry. A fierce critic against media consolidation, Dorgan sponsored legislation to decrease the number of television stations and newspapers that a corporation can own.
