Apple beats Blackberry and itself: shares jump by 11 per cent

Apple has beaten its own and many market-watchers' estimates by having now sold more than 13 million iPhones this year.

The computer company's original goal was to sell 10 million iPhones in 2008, but by selling 13 million by October it has smashed through its own estimates by a considerable margin and has trounced its rival at the top of the US smartphone market, Blackberry.

Apple's latest quarterly iPhone sales of 6.9 million (thanks to the introduction of its 3G version) have put it comfortably in front of RIM (maker of the Blackberry) with 5.4 million units.

The stock market responded in after-hours trading, boosting Apple by 11 per cent.

The Apple iPhone stampede can only get faster from here as the cool factor infects more consumers eager to match their friends purchases. This is a huge inflection point in usability,style and oneupmanship.The iPhone will go down in history as the fastest adopted product the world has ever seen! One more point since it uses the Mac OS X kernel does it not deserve the title computer also? So Apple will more likely be known as a computer maker that now makes smaller computers that happen to be a phone as well dont you think?
