Deutsche Telecom: still as leaky as a sieve

Deutsche Telekom (DT) has this morning reluctantly revealed yet another gaping hole in its systems security - just a day after trumpeting that it is "optimising" data privacy to "send out a clear signal of the significance of data protection in today's information society."

Outed yet again by its nemesis, the influential German magazine Der Spiegel, DT has been forced again to acknowledge that its security systems are still riddled with holes.

This time the disclosure relates to DT's 30 million landline subscribers. Journalists from Der Spiegel have found that it is "easy" and "a simple matter" to break in to DT's poorly protected customer records system and retrieve personal data (including bank account and credit card details) relating to individual landline subscribers.

To make matters worse DT apparently was completely unaware of the problem and moved to remedy the situation only after Der Spiegel produced the evidence and asked for comment.
