Fibre net to set to cause wholesale revolution in Australian broadband market

Australia’s broadband access competitors are bracing themselves for a dramatic change in business model as a natural consequence of Australia’s fostering of an FTTN (fibre to the node) National Broadband Network. Its ISPs will therefore have to consider how to drive margin improvements as the market moves to a resale model, since an FTTN network can’t (indeed, doesn't want to) offer an exact equivalent to exchange-based, local loop unbundling, say the experts.

Ovum analyst David Kennedy told CommsDay that the big driver of change in the wholesale market over the last 12 months has been the growth of unbundled local loop and DSLAM (dsl access multiplexer) installation. “What we’ve seen is a lot of operators focusing on on-net provision in order to improve margins.” But “the next driver is... [the] FTTN network,” said Kennedy.
