TM Forum merges with IPSphere - bolsters business-level convergence credentials

TM Forum has furthered its broadening mission by absorbing another industry membership organisation, IPSphere Forum.

IPSphere Forum concerns itself with developing standards and frameworks (like the TM Forum) but at the business layer of IP service provision using service-oriented architecture (SOA ) principles.

The goal is to automate offer, purchase and provisioning of service components among multiple stakeholders, says the press release.

This is complementary to the work undertaken within the TM Forum's with its Service Delivery Framework, which focuses on "enabling control of service lifecycle management across all execution environments allowing flexibility in binding services with product catalogues"

"The work they've been doing around the whole area of syndication of services and so on is very much front and centre to what we're doing for the last two or three years," TM Forum president, Martin Creaner, told TelecomTV.

The TM Forum is increasingly concerned with the business end of systems interoperability as the industry moves towards its next gen., IP-oriented incarnation.

This transformation, experts think, will see a greater degree of specialisation and collaboration within the service-provider community.

Where telcos in particular have conventionally approached technology and services as something to be brought in-house to support a vertically integrated business model, the speed of change and the sheer complexity inherent in the deployment of new services today, means they're increasingly looking to collaborate with each other and with other service providers by either buying wholesale or partnering on new services and capabilities.

That effort requires a standards framework to enable them to flexibly exchange services, and that's where the TM Forum is increasingly turning its attention with its Service Delivery Platform work.

"By bringing IPSphere into the forum ensures that we're not going to see a divergence -  two different ways of doing things," Creaner told us.

"Eighteen months we set out our stool about broadening our remit into other industries and into other areas of interest - this is us building on that vision."

In addition to that standards work,  it has given space and effort to demonstrating syndicated services at this year's Management World event in Nice.

All IPsphere's work programs are to be integrated into the ever-expanding TM Forum Service Delivery Framework program with immediate effect.

"By bringing IPSphere into the forum ensures that we're not going to see a divergence -  two different ways of doing things," Creaner told us.

"Eighteen months we set out our stool about broadening our remit into other industries and into other areas of interest - this is us building on that vision."
