American Samoa - Hawaii cable gets final approval

The Project Notification Review System Board for the pacific island state of American Samoa has approved a land use permit for a fibre optic communications cable that will link American Samoa to Hawaii.

Ans, after reveiwing the possible environmental impact of the project, the Board has also imposed a series of conditions that interested parties must fulfil. These include a stipulation that  local regulatory agencies must be kept informed of the progress of the project and federal agencies prove thay are in full compliance with relevant legislation.

The US$9 million Pacific Rim cable that currently links Hawaii and New Zealand will be spliced to take a festoon to American Samoa and will then link American Samoa to Hawaii, with an additional  spur running off to the neighboring island Western Samoa.

In May this year, Togiola Tulafono, the Governor of  American Samoa signed documents expediting the project.
