When you sit right at the top of an IT sector you become a 'bellwether'. That literally means that you're a castrated ram with a bell around your neck and you're expected to lead the other sheep through the gate... or not, as the case may be.

Cisco , one of the important global bellwethers in the metaphorical sense, is looking at the gate in a doubtful manner and is making a lot of the other sheep nervous.

John Chambers, Cisco's ebullient CEO, is usually not that easy to distinguish from a sunbeam, so when he's a tad glum people notice and start asking questions. Oh dear.

Chambers says Cisco is experiencing a slowdown in corporate spending and he doesn't see things picking up until next year... at the earliest. In a recent interview with Reuters he lengthened the period of financial dip he had previously set at a two-to-five quarters up to five-to-something vague.
