"It wasn't me, it was him." Consumers are constructing multiple personalities for their broadband lifestyles

A new survey conducted with 5,000 European consumers finds that people are creating a series of complex online identities as they spend more time online meeting their communication, information and entertainment needs.

The new work from Juniper Networks finds that consumers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK (and by logical extension the rest of Europe as well) are turning in their droves to online services and that is driving demand for ever-greater bandwidth and network performance.

The research, carried out in late April this year reveals that 39.3 per cent of respondents have five or even more different identities that are used to access various online services on a single broadband connection, each one utilising unique passwords. What's more 79.9 per cent of those surveyed say their broadband connection is used regularly by two or more users. This  suggests that each broadband connection supports multiple identities and services.

The Juniper research also indicates that consumers are increasingly turning to the Web for a growing range of entertainment, information and communication services beyond basic email, and that traditional sources such as newspapers and magazines are suffering as a result.

Other key findings are that 30 per cent of respondents regularly access Internet TV services, and 61.3 per cent believe the Internet TV will become massively important over the course of the next two years.
