Apple files patent for solar-powered mobile devices

Apple Computers has filed a patent entitled “Solar cells on portable devices” that would pave the way for light-powered devices such as portable music players, mobile phones and laptop computers.

The patent, attributed to several Apple employees, covers the integration of solar cells into portable devices, but it seems that the new technology will not consist of miniaturised versions of the familiar panels seen on street furniture, lights and rooftops. Instead the soar cells will cover most of the surface of a device tin a clear, durable energy-absorbing material.

The patent application states, “Solar cells are typically stacked with other layers made of transparent or semi-transparent materials...
