Organising some self-organising: bodies work to build femtocells right into next gen architecture

Two industry bodies are going to work together to build a strong femtocell component right into next generation mobile network architectures, rather than just have the femto as a sort of in-fill add-on, after the build.

The Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) Alliance and the Femto Forum want to get a new approach off the ground for next gen (WiMAX and LTE) deployments that would see femtos built right into the initial deployment scenarios where, the bodies claim, they could best impact deployment costs.  The NGMN is an operator-led body which includes Vodafone, T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and China Mobile; the Femto Forum exists to push femtocell technology.

The groups claim that in-building deployment for next gen networks could radically change the roll-out economics if done properly.  It sees the femtocells using the high-capacity high-frequencies inside buildings where the high capacity is needed, freeing up the low-end frequencies for the more conventional, outdoors deployment.
