Charles Dunstone has done it again. The founder and boss of Carphone Warehouse (Dunstone still has a 30% stake, itself an achievement after all this time) has stitched together a deal with US electronics retailer Best Buy to form a joint venture in Europe which will see Best Buy acquire 50 per cent of Carphone Warehouse's European retail chain, comprising 2,400 stores.

The two companies have been making progressively cuddlier announcements since Best Buy first said "Hi Charles" by purchasing a 3 per cent stake in Carphone last year. There has been a joint venture to bring the Carphone Warehouse retail model to Best Buy's 900 cavernous US stores, then the US retailer transplanted its technology support service into Carphone's UK business. That lead some US observers to wonder why Best Buy wanted to adopt a Brit retail format for the US market at all since it already had a mobile retail operation in its stores.
