Linux could drive one in five mobiles

Perennial burr under the Microsoft’s PC OS saddle, Linux now has its sights set on the mobile market where it has ambitions to, if not unseat both Windows Mobile and OS leader Symbian, at least give them a run for their money.

New data from ABI Research says that Linux is capable of grabbing 20 per cent of high-end mobile market share by 2013, mostly through the efforts of two mobile OS developments: the open software  LiMo (Linux Mobile) and Google's Android, which is Linux based.

In addition, Nokia's support for the Maemo solution puts another powerful rider in the Linux camp: Maemo.org provides an open source development platform for Nokia Internet Tablets and other Linux-based devices.

These factors will culminate in a Linux mobile market share of nearly one out of every five mid- or high-end mobile devices by 2013, says ABI, so it's time for some in the industry to start eating their words.
