White space device fails its tests

Occupying those white spaces might be more difficult than previously thought.

Following on from last week’s reports that Google has bounced back from its failed bid in the US spectrum auctions by coming up a with a new proposal to exploit the so-called ‘white spaces’  between licensed spectrum, comes the news that a Microsoft device designed for the application has failed its FCC testing.

Agency officials said the trial handset “unexpectedly shut down" after proving unable to identify licensed broadcasts and avoid interference.
