Indian telecoms market powers ahead

India added an astonishing 8.49 million new phone connections over the course of February, the shortest month of the year.

The sub-continent's telecoms regulator, the TRAI, says that the total number of subscribers in India stood at to 290.11 million as at February 29 this year. That figure is 43 per cent above  the number calculated for the same month one year ago - in 2007. At that time India had 202.90 million telephony subscribers.

On the mobile side, subscriber numbers increased by 8.53 million to a total of 250.93 million, up 54.3 per cent year-on-year. At the end of February 2007, that number had been 162.52 million.
