This week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona drew more than 55,000 visitors including delegates, exhibitors, contractors and media, an increase of 3,000 attendees from 2007, making this year the largest turnout yet, according to the GSM Association (GSMA).
“The record attendance figures at this year’s Congress reflect both the extraordinary and compelling conference programme, which covered a broad range of topics from Long-Term Evolution to made-for-mobile short films to the environment, and the high quality of the exhibition,” said John Hoffman, CEO of the GSMA’s conference division.
The industry’s main conference featured high-level speakers from across the world that included chief executive of Vodafone Arun Sarin, CEO of China Mobile Wang Jianzhou, Cisco CEO John Chambers, Nokia head Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo as well as film legends Robert Redford and Isabella Rossellini.
Other news: Google's Android premiered at the show with many companies showing working prototypes of the open platform. Android is likely to be commercially released later this year.
Another observation was that four out the five largest handset manufacturers in the world all released new devices this week except for one: Motorola.
