Peer-to-Peer mobile calls for free!

Swedish company, TerraNet has invented a method for wireless communication over peer-to-peer networks to improve communications in remote villages, wildlife reserves or areas with patchy or nonexistent coverage.

The Scandinavian start-up, which was formed in 2004, enables users to make calls on their handsets without a mobile phone base station, antenna installations or infrastructure.

TerraNet founder Anders Carlius noticed there was a missing operational infrastructure for mobile communication in remote areas particularly in developing countries while on a Safari. Mr. Carlius found he was unable to communicate with his friends in another automobile a few feet away, due to poor connectivity.  "I started thinking, 'couldn't we get phone-to-phone without needing any other equipment, and actually have real voice communication, like a telephone call, between units?'" he told the BBC.

The TerraNet technology works using handsets adapted to work as peers that can route data or calls for other phones in the network.

There is one misunderstanding in the BBC article. Ericsson has NOT
invested in TerraNet. TerraNet is funded by private investors.

BBC has been notified of the error and we expect them to correct the article as soon as possible.
The radio interview on Digital Planet is correct and we recommend you to listen to the pod-cast.
