Telefonica anticipates strong broadband growth in Spain

Spain’s incumbent operator, Telefonica, plans to rapidly extend its fibre-optic network to cope with increasing demands of broadband Internet growth, said strategy director Julio Linares.

The Internet in Spain got off to a slow start but lately there has been a considerable increase in usage and it is quickly becoming one of the main drivers of Telefonica’s business. Mr. Linares predicts that 53 per cent of Spanish households are expected to have broadband Internet connections by 2009, versus 31 per cent in 2006.

Although Spain still lags behind in the ratings against most EU countries in terms of high-speed Internet connections, Mr.
