Mobile phones now afflicted by 400 viruses

The numbers and types of mobile phone viruses are proliferating at a worryingly rapid rate, and new devices such as the iPhone are an irresistible challenge to hackers and other cyber-criminals. So says Jari Heinonen, the VP of global ICT security at F-Secure.

Mr. Hainonen says, “Currently there are about only 400 viruses that relate specifically to mobile phones, but all of them were created over just the last one and a half years. When looked at from that perspective, the development in this area has actually been quite fast.”

He continues. “It the beginning the viruses were fairly benign, even a a little bit funny. They’d change things like icons or cause the screen to blink, that sort of thing, but now the latest viruses have things like spying applications embedded in them that can copy SMS messages and voice calls and then load them up on to websites.”
