Dowa wants to recycle precious metals from SE Asia mobiles

Japan’s Dowa Holdings wants to import used mobile phones from Southeast Asia to extract nonferrous metals such as gold and copper from them for recycling.

The plan will be a joint project with the Geneva-based Secretariat of the Basle Convention,
that is aimed at controlling transfers of hazardous waste between nations and its eventual disposal.

At the moment, in Southeast Asia, used and defunct cell phones are transported to China for recycling, wherein most cases only precious metals are extracted.
