Ericsson: Mobile 2.0 to supersede Web 2.0

A lot of people might only just be beginning to get their heads around the concept of Web 2.0 but Ericsson says its days are already numbered. In a new whitepaper, the Swedish manufacturer of telecoms equipment claims that Mobile 2.0 will “rapidly supersede” Web 2.0. That was quick.

The 19-page document outlines what Ericsson describes as “rich interactive media on your mobile... personalised, anytime and anywhere,” and says that the commercial opportunities are substantial for businesses that ‘act promptly’.

Kursten Leins, Ericsson Australia’s strategic marketing manager believes the services sector on mobiles will be a major growth area over the coming year. “Early movers will gain competitive advantage through offering their customers value-added services through the mobile channel,” he says.

The Ericsson whitepaper was published just 24-hours after Nokia’s head of product management, Matt Gaskell, told our sister publication CommsDay that Nokia will be increasingly involved in providing mobile services alongside its handset division.

Last month Nokia announced that by 2008 the company will have restructured to reflect “strategic emphasis on growing its offering of consumer Internet services.” The company already up-sells service features of several handset products, such as voice navigation for the N95 GPS navigator that is charged on a monthly basis.

One point in the Ericsson report that is also stressed by Nokia is the emergence of ‘social networking’ on mobile devices.

If they can build in Facebook type networking, i.e. sign up to the mobile version of Facebook and it automatically sends and SMS to everyone in your address book inviting them to take part - then they're on to a winner. Include autmoatic upload of photos and video a la FlickR and this would be one of the most compelling cases for mobile data usage I've seen.
